With support from Creative Scotland, Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) developed a pilot programme of film education in public libraries in Scotland. This explored the contribution that film education could make to the Scottish public library strategy Ambition & Opportunity, particularly Strategic Aim 5: Libraries Promoting Culture and Creativity.
Twelve film clubs were established in six library services in Edinburgh, South Ayrshire, Western Isles, Falkirk, Midlothian and North Lanarkshire, brining together communities to watch, discuss and learn about film in areas where little or no film provision existed. Over the course of the project all participating libraries received valuable new film equipment, licensing and professional development training for library staff – providing them with all they needed to present regular screenings and a range of special events.
The success of this pilot programme led many other library services to establish film clubs, and more than half of Scotland’s services are now establishing their own clubs.
