Get to know: Once Were Farmers

Once Were Farmers is an award-winning production company and animation studio, creating characters, stories, graphics, and visual effects for an international client base. The company is one of the first recipients of Screen Scotland’s new Broadcast Content Fund.

The Broadcast Content Fund is designed to support the sustainable growth of Scotland’s broadcast sector, encouraging the development of new projects, the scaling up of already successful activities and the production of commissioned programmes.

Will Adams is director and producer at Once Were Farmers, which he co-founded with Rory Lowe in 2002. The company is responsible for the BAFTA Scotland-winning short animation, Widdershins and the BAFTA-nominated Scottish Cup Campaign. We caught up with Will to hear more about the company's work.

Chatting with Will

Will spoke to us about his day-to-day and the live projects the company has on at the moment.

“We started out working in motion graphics and commercials before shifting our focus onto production around 2010. I manage our office in Codebase Stirling and spend my time on development between live projects.”

“We’re currently working on the idents for the new BBC Scotland – we produced four for the launch and have six more to do over the coming months. We’re also producing a Wars of Independence mini-series for BBC Bitesize.”

Once Were Farmers works to create an environment that helps graduates get a foot in the door of the industry, hosting programmes like Animation Base Camp with Sony Pictures Animation.

“We have a long track record of talent development and have given many graduates their first break into the industry. Whilst they often move on, their goodwill enables us to tap into a wider community and talent pool.”

“We usually manage to employ a recent graduate on our bigger projects – and we ran the Animation Base Camp in association with Sony Pictures Animation in 2016, which hosted 15 graduates from 3 different countries. We plan to run similar projects when we’re crewing up for a large commission.”

We asked Will about the types of opportunities that the Broadcast Content Fund has opened up for the company.

“The Broadcast Content Fund has enabled us to co-option the rights to The Adventures of Honey and LeonAlan Cumming and Grant Shaffer’s kids’ books, about the comical adventures of an intrepid canine duo.

“Most of our development is self-funded, so having the funds to bring in additional expert talent from outside our company is a huge boost.”

What’s next for Once Were Farmers?

“We have very high hopes for The Adventures of Honey and Leon and expect it to be a significant turning point in our company’s history. Whilst it’s early days, there is already a great buzz around the project and it’s really exciting to work with such high-profile talent.”
