New programme to improve cinema provision in Scotland

Screen Scotland has supported Regional Screen Scotland, working in partnership with Film Hub Scotland, to lead a programme of research, development and support to address gaps in cinema provision in communities across Scotland.

The two-year programme will deliver research and project development in areas of Scotland which have little or no cinema provision and work with them to identify and implement models for film exhibition in their area. This project is informed by several research and development initiatives carried out in recent years.

Findings from the initial research phase will be used to create a programme of funding and development, designed to enable communities to establish film programmes and models for cinema.

The project will offer crucial non-capital support such as organisational start-up costs, staffing, and research and development, as well as training in programming, marketing and audience development to enable existing venues and community groups to develop new local cinemas.

The project will also establish and develop regional networks, aimed at encouraging new venues, sustaining existing operators, and attracting larger and more diverse audiences.
