Screen Argyll Animation Academy

The Animation Academy was designed to increase knowledge and understanding of animation and film, and encourage young people in Argyll and the Isles to think of the screen industries as a viable career option

In 2024, Screen Argyll developed a new online Animation Course for 16 – 25-year-olds. Funded by Screen Scotland, the programme engaged participants from remote and rural locations across Scotland who would otherwise be unable to access these opportunities. They were able to join in online, after receiving resource packs in the post with everything they needed to take part.

The Animation Academy was designed to increase knowledge and understanding of animation and film, encourage young people in Argyll and the Isles to think of the screen industries as a viable career option, and give them a professional learning experience with access to inspirational industry experts.

Participants learned more about animation in a variety of forms and developed new skills during masterclasses from professional animators, applying these to create their own animations which responded to the challenge to make a ‘film in a day’. These films were then presented at an online screening event which was created and coordinated by the group.

Throughout the course the young people created a portfolio of their creative work and learning journey to successfully gain an arts award qualification.

After completing the academy, participants were invited to join Screen Argyll’s alumni network where they will receive support in submitting their films to festivals and continue their development through mentorship, professional opportunities and educational events.
