John Leguizamo has joined feature documentary Cyclovia as Executive Producer.
The film is directed by BAFTA winner Finlay Pretsell (Time Trial, Douglas Gordon by Douglas Gordon) and produced by Sonja Henrici (Parcel of Rogues / Sonja Henrici Creates, UK) with Tobias Janson (Story, Sweden), Kaarle Aho (Making Movies, Finland) and Nicolas van Hemelryck and Clare Weiskopf (Casatarantula, Colombia), whose credits between them include the Academy Award-nominated The Look of Silence and A House Made of Splinters, and Berlinale Crystal Bear winner Alis. Sigrid Dyekjær also executive produces.
Cyclovia follows daredevil downhill riders, grassroots campaigners and elite racers across Bogotá, Boyacá, Cali, Medellín and La Guajira — a country where the bicycle is transport, protest, therapy and national obsession at once.
John Leguizamo said: “I love cycling. I’ve tried it. Alas, the pros have nothing to worry about from me. But I love Latin content, and I love stories about Latin excellence, and this is both. Colombia’s relationship with the bicycle is unlike anywhere else on earth, and Finlay and this team are telling that story with the scale and the soul it deserves. I’m thrilled to be on board.”
Director Finlay Pretsell said: “John getting behind this film is a gift. Cyclovia is about people who have turned a simple machine into a way of surviving, celebrating and dreaming, and John’s whole body of work is about pulling Latin stories out of the margins and into the centre of the culture. That’s exactly where this film belongs.”
Producer Nicolas van Hemelryck (Casatarantula) said: “Colombia in cinema too often gets reduced to tropes that have little to do with the country we actually live in. Cyclovia is the opposite of that. I grew up cycling in Cali through a period of deep upheaval, and the bicycle was a constant thread that ran through everything. Every Sunday the main roads still close for the Ciclovía and the city becomes a carnival on two wheels, crossing every social divide we have. That’s the Colombia we want to put on screen.”
Producer Sonja Henrici said: “Documentaries from Latin America still get made largely for European festival audiences. We want this one to also play in Bogotá and in the Bronx. John gives us a route to both, and he arrives at the stage where it actually changes what the film can be.”
The international co-production is backed by broadcaster commitments from SVT (Sweden) and YLE (Finland), with UK and Colombian tax credits. Public funders include Screen Scotland, the Swedish Film Institute, Film i Väst, AVEK and the Finnish Film Foundation. Shooting begins in spring 2027 for delivery in early 2028.
Cyclovia is produced by Parcel of Rogues / Sonja Henrici Creates (UK) in co-production with Casatarantula (Colombia), Story (Sweden) and Making Movies (Finland), in association with MadLove (Colombia).
