Twenty-two talented filmmakers have been selected by Take Three and Screen Scotland for the inaugural North Star Shorts and Next Wave programmes. Take Three forms part of Screen Scotland’s new Talent Builder programme, which was announced earlier this year.
Nine live action fiction projects have been selected, spanning comedy, horror, dystopic and drama genres.
The filmmakers will receive development support, including workshops, editorial feedback and bespoke training and will be awarded £25,000 in production funding. Each project will also receive an additional £3,000 to support the writer and producer during the development process.
North Star Shorts
North Star Shorts provide an opportunity for early career Scotland-based talent to make their first fully funded short film, with editorial support through development and production.
Supported by both Screen Scotland and BFI NETWORK (awarding funds from the National Lottery), the selected short films by emerging talent will be awarded funding of £25,000.

Programme Directors Carolynne Sinclair Kidd and Holly Daniel said: “We were impressed by the high level of applications received and it was a tough process to choose this final, inspiring slate of short films. Each project team reflects the creative ambition of Take Three and exemplifies the richness of storytelling emerging from Scotland. We’re excited to see these film ideas brought to life and to share them with audiences.”
Kieran Hannigan, Head of Scripted at Screen Scotland said: “North Star Shorts and Next Wave are a critical step in Screen Scotland’s Talent Builder programme. They give filmmakers the opportunity and support needed to develop their voices and hone their craft as well as giving them a platform to announce their talent. We are excited by the first cohort announced today and can’t wait to see what comes over the next few months.”
