Visible Fictions is delighted to launch new early animation talent development opportunity Wee Wonders Scotland.
Wee Wonders Scotland officially opens across Scotland on Monday 17 November 2025 to support new and emerging talent in writing and directing for animation, nurturing authentic voices to produce four short animations between 1-3 minutes in length.
Wee Wonders Scotland is looking for original ideas of all animation styles and open to any age range of audience from children and family through to adult animation, and encourage creatives from traditionally excluded backgrounds to apply.
Successful talent will receive up to £7K funding to write a final draft script and to produce the animated film. Selected participants will also receive regular one-to-one sessions, development workshops, editorial support and industry mentorship per specialised animation style of project.
Led by Programme Manager Wilma Smith, the scheme aims to achieve bold, brave and daring calling cards that can travel the film festival circuit and connect with international audiences and help kickstart careers in the Scottish animation industry.
Applications are open from Monday 17 November. Applicants can apply with a written application form or with 5 minute video or audio recording telling us about the short animation they would like to make.
The application deadline is 12 noon on Monday 15 December 2025. For more information on how to submit visit the Visible Fictions website. For support while applying email [email protected].
Wee Wonders Scotland is funded by Screen Scotland and run by Visible Fictions in partnership with Manipulate Arts, North Lanarkshire Council, Edinburgh Short Film Festival, and supported by Animation Scotland and Clanimation.
Dougie Irvine Chief Executive of Visible Fictions said: “I’m so thrilled that Visible Fictions are making Wee Wonders happen – an exciting new opportunity for emerging animators in Scotland. There is no scheme like it in our country and we can’t wait to discover new, fresh voices and unleash their creative and artistic talents on screen. The animation sector in Scotland is filled with skilful and passionate makers and Wee Wonders will undoubtedly play its part in nourishing that wider eco-system. We’re so grateful to Screen Scotland for allowing the scheme to come into being, and hugely thankful to our partners for the support they are giving this project. We can’t wait to share the results with the world and to see the legacy that it creates.”
Kieran Hannigan, Head of Scripted at Screen Scotland said: “Wee Wonders has created to find and nurture new voices in animation in Scotland. The programme is really innovative as it focuses on the growth and development of the filmmakers as they work on their projects. It’s fantastic to be partnering with Wilma Smith and Visible Fictions to deliver Wee Wonders. Wilma has an outstanding track record both as an award-winning animator but also a sympathetic and thoughtful programme leader and educator. While in Visible Fictions, with their focus on inspiring people through storytelling, we have found the ideal partner.”
