Sheffield Doc Fest winner The Boy and the Suit of Lights announces Scottish screenings

Winner of the prestigious Grand Jury Award at Sheffield Doc Fest, The Boy and the Suit of Lights, directed by Inma De Reyes, is set to wow audiences across Scotland as it announces a run of limited screenings at Glasgow Film Theatre, Eden Court and An Lanntair.

Director Inma De Reyes will be in attendance at Glasgow Film Theatre on 29 November 2026 to give a special introduction to the film, and connect with audiences in a post-screening Q&A.

Filmed over five years in Castellón, Spain, the documentary tells the compelling story of Borja, a young boy growing up in a community where bullfighting remains deeply embedded in local culture and family identity.

Hoping to secure a better future for the family, Borja’s grandfather, Matias has placed his dreams and expectations on the young boy’s shoulders. But as Borja navigates childhood in a world where opportunities can feel limited, the film raises powerful questions about family, poverty, personal freedom and the traditions that shape our lives.

Intimate, visually striking and deeply human, The Boy and the Suit of Lights offers audiences the chance to look beyond the spectacle of bullfighting and discover the lives, hopes and dilemmas of the people growing up within its shadow.

The film is produced by Scotland based award-winning Aconite Productions, with Aimara Reques as producer and Beth Earl as co-producer. The creative team also includes editor Colin Monie, composers Nascuy Linares and Jonathan Fyfe, and cinematographer Theodor Solin.

The Boy and the Suit of Lights was supported by Screen Scotland through its Distribution Fund and the Film Development and Production Fund.

Inma De Reyes, director said: “The Boy and the Suit of Lights was made in Scotland, with the warmth of my Spanish hometown, a small, traditional place on the Mediterranean coast. I started the film while studying for my MA in Film Directing in Edinburgh, where I met producer Aimara (Aconite, Glasgow), who felt immediately invested in telling this story. Together, we have been following Borja and his brother Erik for six years, collaborating with some of the most talented film craftspeople in Scotland.  The team and I are extremely excited to bring the film to cinema audiences, particularly in Scotland, where the film really began.”

Aimara Reques, producer and chief executive of Aconite Productions said: “Aconite Productions is incredibly proud and excited to bring Inma De Reyes' The Boy and the Suit of Lights to cinema audiences, particularly to some of Scotland's key independent cinema venues.  Aconite is passionate about bringing ambitious, visually distinctive, author-led documentaries to the big screen. Securing theatrical distribution for feature documentaries remains a significant challenge for independent producers, but we remain committed to ensuring that films with artistic ambition and distinctive voices find their way to festivals and cinema audiences. Being able to bring this award-winning film to cinemas and share it with audiences is a great honour for us.”
